Kalema – The CEO

Kalema is a massive chimpanzee and the alpha male at Ngamba. He commands respect but also plays patiently with the younger chimps. After being rescued by Dr. Gladys Kalema, he arrived at Ngamba in 1999 and after recovering from wounds sustained as a house pet, he slowly worked his way up the ranks. Like many leaders, Kalema will often sit off on his own, observing the interactions and activities of the other group members. Just don’t get in his way during feeding or he’ll show you just who the boss is.
