About BCCP
The Bulindi Chimpanzee & Community Project (BCCP) is a grassroots, non-profit organization established in 2014 to conserve a highly threatened population of wild chimpanzees clinging to survival in Uganda’s ‘Budongo–Bugoma corridor’ (an unprotected landscape located between 2 forest reserves in western Uganda).
Approximately 300 chimpanzees in 9 groups survive here, living alongside local villages. The best-known group, the Bulindi chimpanzees, have been the focus of research since 2006. With most natural habitat converted to farming, chimpanzees throughout the Budongo– Bugoma corridor face intensive pressure from their human neighbors.
BCCP focuses on supporting local people who share their environment with the chimpanzees. The Project distributes 1 million tree seedlings annually to people of more than 250 local villages, maintains 45 water wells, provides fuel-efficient stoves, supports village savings groups and women’s higher education, and helps cover school fees for youth in forest-owning families that preserve their forests (thus protecting 212 acres of forest!). About 35 locals now comprise the talented team led by Director Dr. Matt McLennan and Project Manager Moses Ssemahunge Atwooki.
The Project is featured in BBC Planet Earth III (Forests episode). We at Friends of Chimps continue to support BCCP as it promotes sustainable human–chimpanzee coexistence throughout the Budongo–Bugoma corridor.
